ABSENT GOD
Emmanuel Levinas and the Humanism of the Other
About The Film
68 min. 2014. Hebrew / French / English
Emmanuel Levinas, one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century, presented to the world a post-Holocaust moral philosophy, connecting the wisdom of the Talmud with modern philosophy.
The film presents Levina's notion of “ethics as optics,” which draws a line between the biblical prohibition of images, a unique analysis of the human face and modern-day visual representation of morality.
The idea behind the film is to connect the audience to philosophical problems through the use of unconventional footage, in-depth interviews with philosophers and artists.
The film comprises interviews with Levinas, archival footage from the beginning of the 20th century to the present, and interviews with leading philosophers and artists: Jean-Luc Marion, Luc Dardenne, Michael Levinas, Catherine Chalier, Daniel Epstein, Youssef Seddik, Hagi Kenaan and others.
The film was screened at many film festivals around the world, including the Jerusalem Film Festival, Berlin DOKU.ARTS Festival, Copenhagen Jewish Film Festival, Brussels International Jewish Film Festival, Paris Israeli Film Festival, Barcelona Jewish Film Festival, Paris Museum of the Art and History of Judaism, and more.
